Hausmann Industries Loses It’s Patriarch & Icon – Werner Hausmann

Werner Hausmann, who in 1955 founded Hausmann Industries, a manufacturer of medical office, physical therapy & athletic trainers equipment, died Saturday February 6, 2010 at the hospice of Hackensack University Medical Center. He was 85 and lived in Boynton Beach, Fla.

The cause was cancer, said his son, David.
Mr. Hausmann and his family fled to Belgium after Kristallnacht, the coordinated attack on Jewish people in Nazi Germany. He joined the French resistance during World War II and worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army. He immigrated to the U.S. with his mother and three sisters in 1947; his father had been sent to a concentration camp, never to be seen again.
Each family member arrived in New York with $5, David Hausmann said.
Mr. Hausmann, who studied carpentry, opened a woodworking shop in upper Manhattan in 1955.
“He was asked to make parallel bars, so my father — who never said no to any request or challenge — built and installed them,” his son said.
Those parallel bars fell apart, but Mr. Hausmann discovered a niche in physical therapy gear.
He branched into medical treatment tables and other types of medical furniture. In 1966 he & his partner Jack Guggenheim, built a factory in Northvale, NJ.
Today the privately held Hausmann Industries employs 90 people, said David Hausmann, the CEO.
Mr. Hausmann semi-retired in the early 1990s and moved to Florida from Englewood several years ago.
In addition to his son, Mr. Hausmann is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen; a daughter, Maddi Hausmann Sojourner, two sisters, Ruth Selling and Inge Silberthau, and four grandchildren.
Donations may be made in his memory to Hospice Program of Hackensack University Medical Center.
